Treatment of Severely Atrophied Mandible

This course provides a practical overview of the surgical management of the severely atrophied mandible, with a particular focus on inferior alveolar nerve lateralization and transposition techniques.

Explore the workshop content

Participants will learn how to assess mandibular anatomy using CBCT, develop an appropriate treatment plan, understand the indications and limitations of nerve repositioning procedures, and explore alternative treatment options including short implants, bone augmentation, ridge reconstruction, and other advanced implant strategies.

The course will also address surgical anatomy, step-by-step techniques, neurosensory complications, prevention and management of complications, and clinical decision-making through representative cases.

The main goal is to provide clinicians with a structured approach to selecting the safest and most predictable treatment for patients with severe mandibular atrophy.

Hands-on Facial Local Skin Flap Course

In an informal small group session, delegates will be guided through the theory, decision-making, and practical skills required to resect facial non-melanoma skin cancers and to reconstruct the defects with a site-specific range of small local flaps. This will be done with an animal skin model.

Explore the workshop content

The range of flaps will include rhomboid, bilobed, V-to-Y, and lateral advancement flaps. Time permitting, there will be opportunities to discuss options for larger and more complicated defects.

Learning objectives
Following the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Describe the principles and margins required to excise non-melanoma skin cancers.
  2. Describe a range of local flaps and their specific use in facial subunits.
  3. Describe pitfalls to avoid when resecting and reconstructing around the eyelids.
  4. Discuss with patients when local flaps may or may not be appropriate and when consideration needs to be given to other techniques.
  5. Execute proper surgical techniques for harvesting local flaps.
  6. Demonstrate atraumatic tissue handling, meticulous undermining, and precise key-stitch placement to create tension-free wound closures.
